What it's about

Ponyboy Curtis is fourteen and lives in a small Oklahoma city with his two older brothers. They're greasers, poor kids with long, oiled hair, always at war with the Socs, the rich kids from the other side of town. One night a fight goes terribly wrong, and Ponyboy and his friend Johnny have to run.

Why it's worth reading

It was voted onto PBS's Great American Read and is one of the most-read young-adult novels ever. Hinton wrote it as a teenager, and its story of loyalty and class still hits teens hard.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
