How we rank

We analyzed 8,632 books from more than a century of prizes, canon lists, bestseller lists and reader data. 2,816 made the ranking.

A book gets in by earning it one of three ways: critics (a major prize, or a place on a respected best-books list), sales (a long run as a bestseller), or buzz (months on the bestseller lists right now). It also has to be widely read and well loved by readers.

Then every book gets one Must-Read Score:

PartWeightWhat it measures
Readers42%How much readers love it, compared with books from the same era
Critics and sales48%How strong its prize, best-list and bestseller record is
Buzz10%How much it's selling and winning right now

The best book we found scores 99, and the last book to make the ranking scores 50. The Top 50 is the 50 highest scores, with a mix of new, modern and classic books. Your 50 is the same ranking with everything you've read taken out.

How it works in detail

The three ways in

Loved by readers

Every book needs at least 10,000 readers (3,000 if it's under two years old) and an average rating of 3.7★ or better (3.5★ for the strongest critics' picks). A rating from only a handful of readers counts for less until more readers weigh in, so one or two ratings can't decide a book.

Readers are compared within each era (new: the last five years; modern: 1990 on; classic: before 1990). New books are rated mostly by fans who chose them, and classics by everyone who was assigned them, so this lets a beloved classic compete fairly with this year's hit.

Where the data comes from

Prizes and best-books lists come from the prizes' and publishers' own records, and bestseller history from the New York Times and Publishers Weekly. Reader numbers come from Hardcover and other large reading communities. We use them to score books; we don't show star ratings, only our own Must-Read Score. Covers, editions and publication years come from Open Library, the Internet Archive's free public catalog.
