What it's about

In late 1936, George Orwell went to Spain to report on the civil war and joined a militia fighting Franco instead. He describes the strange, egalitarian atmosphere of revolutionary Barcelona, the cold and boredom of the trenches, being shot through the throat by a sniper, and then the Communist-led crackdown on his own militia that forced him to flee the country.

Why it's worth reading

It's on the Modern Library list of the best nonfiction. It's honest and vivid, and the betrayals Orwell saw in Spain shaped Animal Farm and 1984.

Good to know

Two chapters on the politics of the Spanish left are dense; many editions move them to an appendix, and readers can skim them.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
