What it's about

Charley 'Chick' Benetto was briefly a major-league baseball player. Now he's a drunk who's lost his family, and he decides to end his life. Instead, he finds himself back in his hometown, at his childhood house, where his mother, who died eight years earlier, is waiting for him as if nothing happened. He gets to spend one more day with her.

Why it's worth reading

It spent weeks at #1 on the New York Times list. Like all of Albom's novels, it's short and simple, a story about the parent who loved you most and the things you wish you'd said.
