What it's about

In 1975, during the State of Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, four strangers come to share a cramped apartment in a seaside Indian city. Dina is a widow trying to stay independent by running a small sewing business. Ishvar and his nephew Om are tailors who fled caste violence in their village. Maneck is a student from the mountains. As they become a kind of family, the government's brutality threatens everything they've built.

Why it's worth reading

It was a Booker finalist and a pick on the BBC's Big Read, and it became an Oprah's Book Club pick. It's a huge, heartbreaking and sometimes funny portrait of India.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
