What it's about

Kai, a demon in a human body, wakes up to find he has been murdered and imprisoned in a watery tomb. Freed by his oldest friend, a witch, he sets out to discover who betrayed him and why. As he does, the story moves back to his past, when he and his friends fought a war against a conquering empire and helped build the world that now seems to be turning on him.

Why it's worth reading

It was a finalist for the Hugo and the Nebula. Martha Wells, author of the Murderbot books, writes an inventive fantasy with a sardonic, loyal hero.

Good to know

It alternates between past and present, and the world-building is thrown at you with little explanation.
