What it's about

In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the edge of the Empire, a Treasury officer vanishes from a room locked from the inside, in a building whose every entrance is guarded. The Empire sends its most brilliant and eccentric investigator, Ana Dolabra, and her bemused assistant, Dinios Kol, whose altered memory lets him record everything he sees. What they uncover goes far beyond one missing man.

Why it's worth reading

It was a Hugo Award finalist and a Goodreads Choice finalist. It's a clever locked-room mystery in a strange, vividly imagined world, with one of fantasy's best detective partnerships.

Good to know

It's the second Ana and Din mystery, after The Tainted Cup. It solves its own case, but the first book introduces the characters and the world.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
