What it's about

Years after a war and plagues have destroyed civilization, Gordon Krantz drifts across the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Desperate and cold, he puts on the uniform of a dead mail carrier, and in the next village, people take him for a postman from a restored United States. Gordon keeps up the lie, and finds it gives people hope, which makes him a target for violent survivalist warlords.

Why it's worth reading

It was a finalist for both the Hugo and the Nebula. It's a story about how a symbol can rebuild a civilization.

Good to know

It's quite different from the Kevin Costner film. There's violence and an odd final section.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
