What it's about

On the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, the most valuable substance in the universe, young Paul Atreides arrives with his noble family to take over the planet's rule, knowing it may be a trap. When his family is betrayed, Paul flees into the deep desert, where he must survive giant sandworms and earn the trust of the Fremen, the planet's fierce native people, who may see in him the messiah of their prophecies.

Why it's worth reading

It's the best-selling science-fiction novel of all time, and it earns it: a vast, intricate world of politics, religion, ecology and power, with a hero story that slowly turns into a warning about heroes. Few books have shaped modern science fiction more.

The first hundred pages are dense with invented terms; there's a glossary at the back. It's the first of a series, but it stands on its own.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
