What it's about

In 1930s East Texas, eleven-year-old Harry Collins and his little sister find the mutilated body of a Black woman tied to a tree in the river bottoms. Their father, the local constable, sets out to find the killer, but the town would rather blame a Black man, or the legendary Goat Man said to live in the woods. Harry, now an old man, tells what happened that summer.

Why it's worth reading

It won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel. It's often compared to To Kill a Mockingbird, a dark, atmospheric story about a boy facing evil and racism.
