What it's about

For decades a stretch of coastline called Area X has been cut off from the world, overtaken by something no one understands. Four women, a biologist, an anthropologist, a surveyor and a psychologist, are sent on the twelfth expedition. The earlier ones ended in suicide, madness or cancer. The biologist tells what they find: a tower that goes down into the earth, with words written on its walls in living matter.

Why it's worth reading

It won the Nebula Award and became a film with Natalie Portman. It's eerie, beautiful and unsettling.

Critics and Bestseller are two ways to earn a place: a book's stronger one counts more. Buzz rewards recent bestseller weeks and prizes, so older books start at zero. The parts combine into the Must-Read Score, shown on a scale where the best book we found scores 99 and the last book to make the ranking scores 50.
