What it's about

Private Cyril Bagger has survived the trenches of World War I by his wits, cheating and swindling his fellow soldiers whenever he can. One day he and four other soldiers are sent out into No Man's Land on a grim errand: to find a wounded comrade and put him out of his misery. Instead, among the craters and corpses, they find a fallen angel, apparently brought down by artillery fire. Each man has to decide what it means and what to do with it.

Why it's worth reading

It won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a rare win for a writer best known for horror. It's short and powerful, a war novel and a story about faith, greed and redemption.
