What it's about

Cordelia's mother is a sorceress who can take control of Cordelia's body whenever she likes. When her mother sets out to marry a rich, kindly squire in the countryside, Cordelia realizes the squire and his household are in danger. Help comes from the squire's sister Hester, an unflappable older woman with a cough and no patience for nonsense, and her friends.

Why it's worth reading

It was a finalist for the Nebula and the Goodreads Choice Award. It's a dark, funny retelling of the Grimms' fairy tale The Goose Girl.

Good to know

It's about a child abused and controlled by her mother. Kingfisher's humor keeps it from getting too grim.
